What is a Workers' Compensation Injury?

Read more to learn what is and is not covered under Arizona Workers’ Compensation Law.

Arizona law says that a worker who has an “injury by accident” in the “course and scope” of employment that “arises out of” employment has a compensable claim.

Some injuries by accident are obvious, like a fall at work or back pain after lifting a heavy object on the job. Other injuries are less obvious, like a heart attack, stroke, or PTSD that was caused or hastened by your work duties. All of these can be considered valid work accidents. You can also have a gradual injury, or an injury that happens over time such as hearing loss from exposure to loud noises at work, or carpel tunnel syndrome from repetitive use of the hands at work. You could also have an occupational disease such as exposure to asbestos or other chemical exposures.

If you are injured at work, you have one year from the date of the accident to file a claim with the Industrial Commission of Arizona (ICA), but you must notify your employer of the accident immediately! If you do not file a claim within one year or you do not immediately notify your employer, your claim may be denied.
